The Chicago area was inhabited by several Native American tribes for centuries
before French explorers came to the area in the 18
th century. The name "Chicago" is a French version of the Miami-Illinois
word for "wild onion." Chicago was incorporated as a U.S. city
in 1837, and served as a vital commerce hub between the Great Lakes and
the Mississippi River. Chicago's population grew rapidly throughout the 19
th and 20
th centuries, and the city quickly became a world-class metropolis.
Chicago is the third-largest city in the U.S., with a population of over
2,700,000 people. Chicago is well known for its improvisational comedy,
music scene, and for the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), which is
the second-tallest building in the U.S. Chicago sees more than 45 million
visitors every year—many of whom come through the O'Hare International
Airport, one of the world's busiest.
